Comprehensive accessibility guideline has been issued by Department of Empowerment of People with Disability, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.  

As per the government circular it has been acknowledged that the current crisis poses even a greater threat to Divyagjan (People with disability) not just due to there lesser immunity, ability to perceive information but also due lack of accessibility features in the physical environment and ecosystem provided at COVID related Facilities.

Below are the basic accessibility guidelines & features that are mandated. These are as per reasonable accommodation in the centers for COVID 19 testing and Quarantine facilities as well as hospitals and health centers: 

  • All operating and control mechanisms and self-operated devices such as sanitizer dispensers, glove cases, soaps, wash basins etc should be placed within approachable reach of people with disability, especially for wheelchair users.
  • Graphical and simple, prominent signage as per standard requirements of color and contrast should be installed.
  • Ramps (gradient 1:12) with railings must be provided.
  • There must be at least One (01) low height accessible counter at reception, testing areas and pharmacies.
  • Audio announcements and captioned videos for public announcements of important news should be made.
  • Accessibility in Lifts should be ensured. Alternatively lift-man in at least one lift must be present for providing assistance to people with disability.
  • There should be Reserve areas / wards for People with Disability that may be provided with accessible toilets.
  • There must be provision of vestibular cabins for attendants of COVID-19 patients specially with intellectual disability and mental illness.
